The Great Escape

April 8, 2005

This morning Jason told me about a show he and his wife watched on OPB recently.  About a prison break by the Allies from a Nazi POW camp.  It was the subject of a film from the 60s.  I’m gonna try to rent it soon.  Anyway, check out the PBS site about the show.  Can’t wrong with NOVA.  The site’s crazy: articles about the guys that made it, sketckes of the camp, diagrams of the tunnels… The story’s even crazier.  The Nazis built the camp on sand so as to hinder digging.  The Nazis put microphones into the dirt so they could hear digging.  So the Allies one-upped them.  The tunnel was 30 feet under ground.  As Jason put it: "Those guys had stones."

That looks awesome. I need to try and catch that show. Another pretty interesting guy that recently passed away was Joseph R. Beyrle. I think I blogged about him once upon a time, but his WWII story is just begging to be made into a blockbuster.
