First thought is how U2 has taken it upon themselves to help make soccer more ‘meaningful and relevant’ to Americans by providing music and voiceovers for ABC. This feels similar somehow, like the Germans are using soccer to bring people closer to God, while U2 is using themselves to bring people closer to soccer…

Second thought is how this feels like an American idea. How many churches have Superbowl parties?

Hey, why not? Churches have movie nights and all kinds of stuff geared towards getting people in the door. Soccer (football) is huge in Europe so it makes sense.

So we should just try to get people in the door?

(I’m feeling fiesty due to work today… let’s have us a debate)

If not, why would churches ever bother to do any community events that weren’t directly related to fundraising or being charitable? Drop off some cash for our car wash or pick up your food basket, otherwise STAY OUT!

The church has an excellent opportunity to provide a safe place for fellowship. Instead of boozing it up in the tavern people are going to be sitting in a church to watch the big game. Those people won’t be driving drunk afterwards and maybe this event saved some lives.

Also, if just one of the people who were brought in the door hangs around to ask some questions and ends up coming to Christ, then isn’t it all worth it?

Dang it. You came up with good points and I’m not feeling nearly as fiesty as I was yesterday. Someone else want to jump in and play devil’s advocate?

hangs head in defeat… for now

You feel victim to one of the classic blunders. The first being, never get involved in a land war in Asia. But only slightly less well known is this, Never go in against Slothboy when a debate point is on the line! Hahahahahahaha
