Well, my plan was not to link to these things every week, but “this week’s Doc J _Lost_ Theory”:http://www.ew.com/ew/article/commentary/0,6115,1556185_3_0_,00.html was just too interesting to pass up.

Wow. That dude has too much time on his hands. I picture him in his mother’s basement with tables upon tables covered with Lost and Heroes related items, with diagrams pinned to the walls and pieces of yarn connecting pictures of cast members from both shows. He mutters to himself constantly, “Save the Cheerleader, Save Kate’s FINE booty.”
Short answer? He’s reading too much into it. The simple fact is that if the whole premise of Lost, a show on ABC, is to set the stage for Heroes, a show on NBC, then a paradox will result. One so powerful that TV itself will cease to exist.
To support his hairbrained theory of collaboration, he is manufacturing bizarre theories. He has it backwards. The Cerberus, “smokey”, is a manifestation of the psychic energies of the people on the island. Not the other way around. Specifically, the psychics that the others have collected, like Walt and Claire’s baby they want so bad. Probably, yes, to use the magnetic force of the island to affect some change, although probably not to create humans with superpowers on a competing network.
Whenever Shannon saw Walt, post abduction, he was dripping wet. Liquid of some kind was flowing off of him, even more than if he had just stepped out of the shower, it was as though he was continually being drenched.
I think that the Others had Walt, along with several other psychics, in Matrix-esque tubes full of some sort of liquid that enhances their psychic abilities. They may be in only a semi-aware conscious state where they are open to suggestion and take orders from the others. (Also See: Minority Report Psychic Juciy Juice Tank) They are employed in some task, but the Cerberus is sort of a by-product that grew out of residual psychic energy. It is probably self-aware to some degree and may continue even if the psychics are unplugged at this point. It certainly has an agenda. It is looking for something in the people that it scans. If they have it (or don’t, I guess) it lets them be. If they are missing the quality (or possibly the reverse again) then it eliminates them.
If nothing else, the death of Eko proved that this quality is not something people have no control over (predestination gets the smackdown) it is clearly a choice they have made. Eko was doing it “right” the first time he was scanned and was doing it “wrong” after his second meeting. SPLAT
Ya know, for somebody who thinks other people read too much into the show, you wrote an awfully long comment…
Yeah, but by reading too much into it I was referring to his crazy jump from point A to point 39.

That, boys and girls, is a stretch.

Actually, didn’t EW.com run an article a couple weeks ago about how Tim Kring (Heroes) and Damon Linelof (Alias) are friends, and how they talked about a creative team-up? Stand by…

I do agree that Smokey is a manifestation of the Others’ (captive?) psychics. It’s interested in the Dharma definition of ‘good’ and ‘bad,’ just like all the Others. Remember all their emphasis on saving ‘good’ ones, on not caring about killing ‘bad’ ones? That’s why it killed Eko, his defiant defense of his life didn’t fit their cookie-cutter good-and-evil definition, which is what the not-Yemi’s-ghost was asking about. When he said, if effect, ‘screw you, I did the best I could,’ Smokey determined him not repentant (good), and offed him.
PS Where’s the Heroes discussion blog? I’m about to start a new one on my own, I think. But I don’t want to, that would be admitting how much of a geek I really am…
