This pleases me…

Out of curiosity, why does that please you?

Aversion for one company and genuine like for the innovative underdog.

    A) I’ve just always had something against Sony…

    and

    B) I’m glad to see the Wii doing so well. Nintendo re-invented the video game by making the Wii so physically interactive. And it’s paid off for them. They didn’t go on the graphics craze like Sony and Microsoft did; they went their own way to make it fun and they’re reaping the benefits. Original forecasts had it failing miserably; but it’s huge now.

I don’t remember any forecasts that it would fail miserably… I think there was concern about how well the wiimote would work but at the end of the day, it’s a Nintendo console. In fact, Sony is the underdog because Nintendo consoles (including handhelds) have sold 403 million units worldwide, as compared to sony’s paltry 236 million.

Personally, I don’t want either one for now. The Wii might eventually make it into my home collection if the girls start gaming.

    I can’t believe I’m breaking Internet Silence™ for this…

I don’t think you can trust those sales statistics, Slothboy. They’re not taking third-party licensed hardware into consideration (like all of Hudson’s Famicom copies), which would slant the data in favor of one particular company. Also, Sony’s overall numbers might not match up to Nintendo’s, but you also need to look at the timeframe; Sony shipped more PS2 units in 6 years than Nintendo shipped in 11 (1985-1996). Even if I tack on, say, 10 million more NES units (w/3rd party hardware, yes, it’s possible), Sony’s still making a good showing, coming into the VG market so late.

Nintendo is still a video-game console maker. Maybe the only true one. Can you play movies on your Wii? The GC was famous for its lack of DVD ability (fixed later by Panasonic, Sony’s usual partner in crime). Cart-based platforms during the CD-ROM era? Nintendo is always 1 step behind in hardware, 2 steps up in marketing and innovative design.

I enjoy the PS3. The Wii, also, looks like a lot of fun. However, they fulfill completely different market demographics, and are targeted as such. Important to keep that in mind as well.

Resuming silence….Oh, can you take the link to my blog down, Hutch? It’s a dead site….

Points well made, E. And linkage taken down.

    Slothy, . 🙂

Yeah, I was more just sorta looking at the “Nintendo as the underdog” concept. Yeah, Sony has shipped a lot in a little time, but if you are going to pick an underdog in the console wars it would probably have to be the Xbox. I had just never heard Nintendo referred to as “the little guy.”
