The Scouring of the Shire

March 28, 2007

Listening to Return of the King here at work right now.  Man, I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed the four hobbits kicking all sorts of tail when they go home to the Shire.  Read it again if you can.  It’s fun.

The lack of the Scouring was my greatest disappointment when I first watched the movie. The extended version was not out yet, so Saruman just kind of disappeared. As the hobbits headed home, I remember chuckling to myself, “Heh, anyone who hasn’t read the book is being lulled into believing it’s over.” And then it didn’t happen!

I do like that part of the book a great deal, but just like Tom Bombadil it is a scene that we can do without. The peril of the Shire was presented as a possible future by Galadriel so the unspoken resolution is that since the ring was destroyed the shire remained safe.

I was confused by the non-extended version of the film that left Saruman alive though. Glad they brought that to resolution in the extended.
