Ah, the Osprey. That and the F-22 Raptor are the two nifties that are supposed to replace our mainstay multipurpose aircraft. The Blackhawk and the F-16, respectively. They are both pretty cool toys, especially the F-22 which is supposed to have multiple configurations, including a VTOL option. That one is having the most trouble with reliability, as could be expected, but if they get it to a solidly functioning state it could be extremely useful.

Here’s the danger as I see it though, both of these are so technology heavy that I worry about how they will work in real combat situations. For example: I replaced (myself) the intake manifold, carburetor, starter, fuel pump, spark plugs, stereo, distributer, and oil filter on my 1971 pickup… not all at once, but over time. Remove part. Bolt on new part. I open the hood of my 1999 Ford Escort, check the oil, and add washer fluid. It requires an astromech droid to properly change the sparkplugs. I hope that these new aircraft will be easy to work on in the field with lots of redundancy. Like the A-10 Warthog. You can’t shoot that thing down.

Why is the AK-47 the choice for global military use? Because they are idiot proof. They work in sand, wind, water, heat, cold, and monkies. The M-16 requires training and expertise to maintain function and while they are a superior rifle when they are working, it is keeping them in a function state that makes them less useful in general application.

So yeah, really cool that the osprey is ready for primetime. I just hope it works as promised.

I made a boo boo. It is the F35 that will have the variations i.e. Vertical Take Off And Landing. F22 is sweet but has only one type.

Good man for correcting yourself. Cause ya know, I was five minutes from doing it myself. 🙂

Yeah, I ran across something today and realized I had two different planes in my mind under the same name. “Oh crap!” I said. “I think I commented about this on Hutch’s blog and I used the wrong name for the plane! TO THE INTERNET!”
