For the academic nerd types:

Reading a heavy book on the Bible/Theology/Ancient Languages/what-have-you and having a hard time getting the overall feel/direction of the book?

(You know, kinda like me starting Paul and the Hermeneutics of Faith and not really tracking with where it’s going)

Or, are you starting to get the impression the author is off his/her rocker?

See if the book has been reviewed on Review of Biblical Literature.   The site is run by the Society of Biblical Literature and provides book reviews for tons of books, old and new.

I skimmed the review for Paul and the Hermeneutics of Faith and I’ve now got a decent grasp of what the overall picture of the book is.  Very helpful.
