I am an ignorant American.  I had no idea that

a) Egypt was so oppressive to its own people

In Egypt today, a gathering of five people or more without a permit is illegal and can result in arrests, beatings, or both. Egypt’s president, Hosni Mubarak, has been in power for nearly three decades and has governed under emergency rule since 1981.

b) that the US sends Egyot a butt-load of cash every year.

The regime is occasionally rebuked by the US and Europe for its abysmal human-rights record. But because Mubarak is considered a valuable US ally on matters concerning Israel and terrorism, Egypt receives nearly $2 billion in US aid every year, second only to Israel.

Yeah, Egypt pretty much gets a fat paycheck because they manage to keep their government oppression within it’s own borders, and generally don’t let it spill over on it’s neighbors.

If there’s anything our government wastes money on (and there’s lots), it’s giving money to people who don’t actually like us at all.

Not quite on topic, but this is a good article I just read about Christian persecution in Egypt

There are so many things I can say about the horrible treatment of Christians in Egypt. Last summer our friends’ jewelry shop was shot at and two were killed (I was visiting the shop just ONE summer before), also, this year, Coptic monks were beaten by fanatics in Luxor, wherever there is a church, they build a huge, imposing mosque right in front of it so you can’t even see the church anymore, you can’t repair anything in church without the government approving it, last summer a Muslim told me that Israel was responsible for 9/11 and not Osama bin Laden and that bin Laden is a hero, I could go on and on. We give money to a country that violates human rights in such horrible ways. If you convert to Christianity, and your family kills you for it, the state will not prosecute.

Well, since England is doing it best to setup a parallel courts system that follows sharia law, and the “Canada Human Rights Commission” in Canada can charge you with crimes for “anti-Islamic” “racist” speech, this sort of anti-Western, anti-Christian, anti-rights oppression will be coming soon to a democracy near you.
