Cartoon Times

July 11, 2006

In answer to a question I originally “pondered many moons ago”:http://www.stephscandlehutch.com/hutch/article/life-questions-i (though the links from the post got lost in translation from one blog platform to the next), a certain cartoon is coming out on DVD later this month. But I’ll get to that in a moment.

On July 25, 2006 the first season of one of the greatest cartoons of all time is going to be released.

“Animaniacs Volume 1”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA57H6/qid=1152583392/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/102-0533373-0564905?n=130

And there was much rejoicing.

With that said, also being released on July 25, is _the_ greatest cartoon of all time.

Oh yes, friends, it’s true…

“Pinky and the Brain, Volume 1”:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000FA57H6/qid=1152583392/sr=11-1/ref=sr_11_1/102-0533373-0564905?n=130

And there was even more rejoicing.

In case you were wondering, both of these items appear on my section of “our wishlist”:http://hutchisonwishlist.blogspot.com/, which should come in quite handy for you all since my birthday is this upcoming Sunday. Please coordinate with my wife, mother and mother-in-law so no double gifting occurs. That can be so awkward.

Finally, I can record over my four VHS tapes of Pinky and the Brain Episodes.

Also, I will fortunately not be compelled to buy the dvds once they become Pinky Elmira and the Brain because that sucked.

Is everyone in agreement that Pinky and the Brain is the greatest cartoon of all time? I think it is, but I really was expecting some debate on that…

Well, certainly one of the best. Around the same time that I was religiously taping Pinky and the Brain the WB had an excellent Batman cartoon that still ranks very high on my all time best cartoon list.

If pressed I would give Samurai Jack the edge over Pinky and the Brain for greatest. cartoon. ever. but I will accept your statement for now.

Samurai Jack. Yeah, never saw it. Haven’t watched the Cartoon Network in a loooong time (that no cable/satellite thing really gets ya sometimes). What makes it so good?

Fogey, those cartoons were the pioneers of modern cartoons. In many ways they are superior to a lot of the junk that is on saturday mornings right now. But there are a few gems that have taken the lessons learned by those pioneers and turned them into something amazing.

Samurai Jack is just flat too cool. The cartoon is extremely well animated (stylized for joy) and the story was great. The trouble with it is that it fell victim to the “Firefly” syndrome. Core group of die hard fans, no consistency in their timeslot, not enough ratings, death. Done by the guy that later did the Clone Wars animated series, also pretty good.

Netflix Samurai Jack Season 1. DO IT NOW!

Samurai Jack! Star Wars: Clone Wars! Ooh, you might want to give a glance to Batman: Beyond as well…
